15. Hair Rollers Guide
Within the past few years hair rollers have been widely accepted as the best means for setting certain hairdos. Several types of hair rollers are currently on the market, some made of wire mesh, some of plastic, in several sizes. One kind is made with a brush inside. This type is particularly good for those not really adept at handling their hair, as the brush keeps the ends of the curl from sliding out. If you are just beginning to experiment with hair rollers, the brush type might be best to start with. Perhaps later you may wish to change to the other kind.
The primary use of hair rollers is to supply fullness to the hairdo. The amount of fullness is governed by the size of the roller used.
The size you choose will also determine whether the fullness will be wavy, curly or straight. The larger your roller, the straighter the finished effect. The smaller the roller, the curlier the fullness in your hairdo will be.
The length of your hair is another factor to consider when choosing hair rollers. Since they run from half an inch in diameter to about one and three-quarters inches, you will have to figure out how your hair will fit over the roller—whether you want merely to loop a strand of hair over it, or whether you wish to wind it over and over. For example, if you wish to curl a strand around a roller that is one inch in diameter, your hair should be at least two and a half inches long.
How hair rollers are placed naturally affects the finished hairdo, as you can see from these pictures. The direction in which they are placed can serve to increase height, increase width or create waves. When aiming for height, pull the strand forward before winding. When you want less height, pull it backward before you wind it.

1. A combination of height and width can be directed to one side by placing the hair rollers as shown. Hair should be 6 to 10 inches long to achieve the wave.

Long hair can only be worn successfully if it is given a great deal of attention. Otherwise it may hang limply or bush out, depending on its texture.

3. The fullest effect of all is achieved by using hair rollers all over the head. Rollers can vary from Vi-inch to VA inches. The hair can be short enough to roll just once over the roller, which will give a short, tossed-salad look, or long enough to roll several times, to produce a smoother, bouffant look.

4. The front hair is cut short and wispy to allow for bangs. The top layer is left 12 inches long. The hair close to the neckline is cut short or entirely off. All this is done so that the top hair will completely overlap the hair underneath, to form a full effect.
